My previous laptop had a built in fingerprint sensor, I became spoiled by the ease and security of just swiping my finger to log on. This product uses the same software that my laptop had, and I believe it’s used by many computer manufacturers using fingerprint readers.
My current laptop a Toshiba Qosmio has face recognition that only works in bright light, even then it takes at least 10 sec. to “recognize” me. I gave up on it, too many bugs.
This reader plugs right into a USB port. When not in use, the connector plug recesses with the cover that protects the sensor, so it’s extremely portable.
The one thing I’ve found, is I need to be careful with it sticking out of the USB port, I could see it being damaged if a heavy object were placed on the end of the reader with nothing under to support it, but the same is true with a flash drive.
I wish my laptop had a built in reader, or that the Toshiba’s “new” technology worked properly, but this is an excellent substitute.
I’ve been using it for a couple of months now and haven’t had any problems.
I bought this product because I want a fingerprint reader for my Mac. It works but only for the login password.
With the Mac version you cannot use it to enter passwords for internet sites.
The Eikon works, but there are a few minuses.
1) It sticks out from the side of a laptop, which makes it vulnerable to being damaged. I usually use it, then remove it.
2) Since it just connects by the USB connector, it doesn’t feel very stable. Once you get used to swiping your finger without applying much pressure, that isn’t a problem.
3) The Protector Suite software (which I also use with another fingerprint reader) is marginal. They also charge for all upgrades.
4) The software is not yet available for the Mac, although they’ve been promising it awhile.
So I’ve had mixed results with the Eikon, but I haven’t found anything better for my application.
