I love gadgets. Always wanted to have all of those wonderful James Bond/Matt Helm/Our Man Flint toys. Bought one of these in a weak moment recently (not on Amazon.com) – want to eventually strap it to a RC airplane. Received today. Tried out on a walk, driving in a vehicle, stood up on a counter while working.

    Pros:
    * Battery charges FAST from your computer’s USB port ~15 minutes (cable included)
    * Good battery life (should run long enough to fill a 2Gb Trans Flash (microSD) card
    * Video quality passable for a pinhole camera – minimum 640X480 resolution
    * Easy to operate and view video, if you have a PC w/USB handy
    * Has date/timestamp function, if you can figure out how it works
    * Product description is accurate (Technical Details are NOT)
    * Should be able to use up to an 8Gb microSD card
    * Can also be used as a USB Flash Drive, Webcam, Camera
    * Super small size, easy operation – but…

    Cons:
    * Lousy “manual” translated from Chinese by someone who flunked high school English
    * No viewfinder – can’t tell if you’re videoing the ceiling while in your pocket
    * Poor video quality at night, lights smear, showcase low frame rate, pinhole focus
    * Not enough resolution to get license numbers of cars or other fine detail
    * Included mini-CD not needed for Win XP or better – use at your own risk!
    * Has Date/timestamp function – resets every time you turn it off
    * Watch out how you insert microSD card – get it wrong and it won’t work!
    * Says “built-in memory” above – don’t believe it! Unit uses microSD card (included)

Easy to operate. If all is working and the battery is charged:
    1. Turn unit on by means of slide switch on right side
    2. Push big white button on rear of unit one time – is now in standby (left LED)
2a. Turns off in 20 seconds to save power – push big button again to “wake it up”
    3. After right LED flashes one long flash, unit is ready. Push big button again
    4. Right LED starts flashing – unit is recording

    To end recording:
    1. Push big white button on rear of unit. 2 short flashes from right LED
    2. Unit is now back in standby
2a. Will go to sleep in 20 seconds unless you push button, start recording again

    When finished recording:
    1. Turn unit off by means of sliding switch on right side of unit to “off” position

    To view video:
    1. Connect to USB port of PC, using enclosed cable.

Windows XP will see the unit as a removable disk, and assign a drive letter. The rest looks like a normal digital camera/camcorder in Windows Explorer/My Computer: REMOVABLE DISKDCIM100MEDIASUNPxxxx.AVI. Just drag and drop using Explorer into a directory of your choice on your hard drive (don’t try to play directly from the device – the transfer is too slow). Once on your hard drive, you can play your videos with your favorite media player, or make a movie with Movie Maker, and you can delete the files on the device using Explorer, to free up the flash memory for your next secret mission.

I found the unit to be a pleasure to use, after I disassembled it to extract the microSD card. It is quite easy to insert the card incorrectly, in which case it ends up nestled against the battery, instead of in it’s slot. So – if you see only the left LED (I don’t give colors, as it seems that the manufacturer changes these to suit their fancy) lit, chances are that you either have no card installed, or you’ve installed it wrong. If so, a quick visit to a local store to buy a set of jeweler’s screwdrivers will be in order. Use the smallest cross-tipped screwdriver in the set, and remove the 8 screws that hold the sides on. Have a small magnifier on hand, and don’t lose your screws – they’re really tiny. Good luck…

Overall, a nice working unit for it’s size and price. So easy to operate, would even make a fun toy for older kids who understand computers (or mom and dad could help out…) Also takes photos – slide switch on left side of unit from “video” to “photo” before turning power on. I would imagine photos to be about cameraphone quality. Good luck, 007…
